Shallowdale House is a perfect base from which to explore the varied landscapes of the North York Moors National Park, to visit York,or to discover the many and beautiful historic sites which the area offers.
The Howardian Hills, which the house overlooks, form a line about 15 miles long, separating the vales of York and Pickering, and act as a bridge between the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds. Named after Castle Howard and the Howard family, the region is one of great interest and beauty with gently rolling countryside, pretty villages, woodland and historic landmarks.
Also nearby are Byland and Rievaulx Abbeys, and Nunnington Hall; whilst a little further afield are Fountains Abbey, Newby Hall, Scampston Hall and Whitby.

Whether you wish to walk, or just potter from village to village, there is always something of interest to discover every few miles: interesting gardens, special churches and wonderful scenery.
